The Truth About Fox Terriers, Chocolate, Raisins, Grapes, Tea and Coffee

Chocolate
The toxic substance in chocolate is called theobromine, it's a naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean used to make chocolate. Humans can clear the theobromine quickly from their system but dogs struggle to get rid of it. The theobromine stays in the blood stream of our pets for 2, sometimes 3 days This is enough time to trigger toxic effects in dogs.

Signs of overdose include restlessness, thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, irregular heartbeat, excessive urination and muscle tremors. These symptoms rarely show up immediately but generally come on a few hours after the chocolate has been eaten. If you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate get him to the vet straight away

Coffee and Tea.

Theobromine belongs to the chemical family that includes Caffeine and Theophylline which are found in Coffee and Tea.Caffeine has a direct effect on the central nervous system and signs of overdose include extreme jumpiness and sensitivity to noise. Do not give your dog Tea or Coffee.

Raisins and Grapes

While it is unclear exactly what substance in grapes and raisins causes the problems, there are many documented cases of dogs experiencing acute kidney problems (renal failure) after eating even a handful of grapes or raisins. All grapes are potentially dangerous to dogs, whether  just picked or dried regardless of whether they came from a store or off the vine. Don't feed your dog grapes or raisins
